Booking a flight in India just got a lot less stressful. Following a record-breaking year for air travel in 2025—with over 16.69 crore passengers taking to the skies—the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has officially updated its refund rules.

Effective immediately, the new Civil Aviation Requirements (CAR) (issued Feb 24, 2026) give you a “safety net” for those accidental bookings or sudden changes in plans.

DGCA 48-Hour Free Cancellation Rule

The biggest headline is the new DGCA 48-hour free cancellation rule. If you book a ticket directly through an airline’s website, you can now:

  • Cancel for free within 48 hours of booking.
  • Change your flight without paying a change fee.
  • Only pay the fare difference if the new flight costs more.

The Catch: To prevent last-minute abuse, this rule only applies if your domestic flight is at least 7 days away, or your international flight is at least 15 days away.

Oops, Wrong Name? Fix It for Free

We’ve all been there—a typo in a middle name that costs thousands to fix. No more. Under the new 2026 rules:

  1. 24-Hour Grace Period: You can correct minor spelling errors for free if reported within 24 hours.
  2. Same Passenger Only: This isn’t for transferring a ticket to someone else, just fixing mistakes for the original flyer.
  3. Direct Bookings: This applies specifically to tickets booked on the airline’s own portal.

No More “Ask Your Travel Agent”

Tired of airlines and travel sites pointing fingers at each other when your refund is delayed? The DGCA has shut that down.

  • 14-Day Deadline: All refunds must be processed within 14 working days.
  • Airlines are Accountable: Even if you booked via a third-party portal (like MakeMyTrip or EaseMyTrip), the airline is now legally responsible for ensuring the refund is issued.

Medical Emergencies: New Protections

If you or a family member on the same PNR are hospitalized, airlines must now offer:

  • A full refund, OR
  • A Credit Shell (valid for future travel).

Pro Tip: Keep your medical certificates ready. These must be verified by an airline’s medical specialist or a DGCA-empanelled expert to qualify.

Why the Change?

This move follows a massive surge in traveler frustration. In December 2025 alone, Indian airlines faced nearly 30,000 complaints, with refund delays being the primary grievance. This update aims to bring transparency to the world’s fastest-growing aviation market.
