Planning a train journey is easy. However, sometimes plans change. When that happens, knowing the railway ticket cancellation rules can save you money.
In India, ticket cancellation and refund rules are governed by Indian Railways and processed mainly through IRCTC for online bookings.
This article explains everything in simple terms — confirmed tickets, RAC, waitlisted tickets, Tatkal rules, and refund timelines.

Cancellation Charges for Confirmed Tickets
If your ticket is confirmed, the refund depends on when you cancel.
If Cancelled More Than 48 Hours Before Departure
A flat cancellation charge is deducted per passenger:
- AC First Class / Executive Class – ₹240 + GST
- AC 2 Tier / First Class – ₹200 + GST
- AC 3 Tier / AC Chair Car / 3AC Economy – ₹180 + GST
- Sleeper Class – ₹120
- Second Sitting – ₹60
The remaining amount is refunded.
If Cancelled Between 48 Hours and 12 Hours Before Departure
25% of the total fare is deducted.
However, the deduction cannot be less than the minimum flat cancellation charges mentioned above.
If Cancelled Between 12 Hours and 4 Hours Before Departure
50% of the total fare is deducted.
Again, the deduction is subject to the minimum flat charge rule.
If Cancelled Within 4 Hours of Departure
No refund is allowed for confirmed tickets.
Also, once the reservation chart is prepared (usually 4 hours before departure), online cancellation is not permitted. In such cases, you must file a TDR (Ticket Deposit Receipt) if eligible.
RAC and Waitlisted Ticket Cancellation Rules
The rules are different for RAC and waitlisted tickets.
- If cancelled up to 30 minutes before departure → ₹60 clerkage charge per passenger is deducted.
- If cancelled within 30 minutes of departure → No refund.
Important Note:
If an e-ticket remains fully waitlisted after chart preparation, the system automatically cancels it. In such cases, the fare is refunded after deducting clerkage charges.
Tatkal Ticket Cancellation Rules
Tatkal tickets have stricter rules.
Confirmed Tatkal Tickets
No refund is given on cancellation.
However, refund is allowed in special cases:
- Train cancelled
- Train delayed by more than 3 hours
- AC failure
- Coach not attached
In such cases, TDR must be filed.
Waitlisted Tatkal Tickets
Refund is allowed after deducting clerkage charges.
Refund in Case of Train Delay or Cancellation
If the train is cancelled by Railways, you get a full refund automatically.
If the train is delayed by more than 3 hours and you decide not to travel, you can file a TDR for a full refund.
How Refund is Processed
- Online bookings → Refund is credited to the original payment method.
- Counter tickets → Refund must be claimed at the reservation counter (if eligible).
- Refund timeline → Usually 3–7 working days for online payments.
GST on Cancellation Charges
GST is applicable on cancellation charges for AC classes.
For Sleeper and Second Sitting, GST is generally not applicable.
Smart Tips to Reduce Cancellation Loss
- Cancel as early as possible.
- Avoid last-minute cancellations.
- Check train status before cancelling.
- Understand Tatkal rules before booking.
Early cancellation means lower deduction. Therefore, timing matters.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
The refund amount depends on when you cancel the ticket and the class of travel. If cancelled more than 48 hours before departure, only a flat cancellation charge is deducted. Between 48 to 12 hours, 25% of the fare is deducted. Between 12 to 4 hours, 50% of the fare is deducted. No refund is given within 4 hours of departure for confirmed tickets.
Yes, in certain cases you can get a full refund. If the train is cancelled by Railways, you receive a 100% refund automatically. You can also get a full refund if the train is delayed by more than 3 hours and you choose not to travel. Confirmed Tatkal tickets normally do not get full refund unless special conditions apply.
Cancellation fees depend on ticket class and timing. For example, Sleeper Class has a minimum cancellation charge of ₹120 if cancelled more than 48 hours before departure. AC classes have higher charges starting from ₹180 to ₹240 plus GST. If cancelled closer to departure, percentage-based deductions (25% or 50%) apply.
You can get a full refund only in special situations such as train cancellation or long delays. Otherwise, cancellation charges are deducted depending on timing. To claim a full refund in eligible cases after chart preparation, you must file a TDR (Ticket Deposit Receipt).
Conclusion
Railway ticket cancellation charges in India depend mainly on timing and ticket type. The earlier you cancel, the higher your refund.
Therefore, always check your travel plans in advance. Even a few hours can make a big difference in refund amount.
Understanding these rules helps you avoid unnecessary losses.
