The State Bank of India (SBI) has recently revised its ATM transaction rules and fee structure. These changes, which largely came into effect in late 2025 and early 2026, primarily target high-volume users and those using non-SBI ATMs.
If you are planning a trip to the ATM, here are the three critical things you need to do to avoid unexpected charges or failed transactions.
1. Carry Your Registered Mobile Phone
For security, SBI uses an OTP-based cash withdrawal system for all transactions of ₹10,000 and above.
- The Rule: When you request a large amount, the ATM will prompt you for an OTP.
- The Action: Ensure the mobile number linked to your bank account is active and the phone is with you. You will receive a 4-digit OTP via SMS that you must enter at the ATM screen to authorize the withdrawal.
2. Check Your “Free Limit” Status
The days of unlimited free withdrawals for all account types are over. SBI has introduced stricter caps, especially for salary accounts.
- Salary Accounts: These are now capped at 10 free transactions per month at non-SBI ATMs (previously unlimited).
- Savings Accounts: Generally limited to 5 free transactions per month at other bank ATMs.
- The Action: Use the YONO SBI app to track your monthly usage. If you’ve exceeded your limit, you will now be charged ₹23 + GST for every subsequent cash withdrawal at a non-SBI ATM.
3. Verify Your Card’s Daily Limit
Not all SBI cards are the same; your daily withdrawal cap depends entirely on your card variant.
- Classic/Maestro Cards: Typically capped at ₹40,000 per day.
- Platinum Cards: Can go up to ₹1,00,000 per day.
- The Action: If you need more cash than your current limit allows, you can temporarily or permanently increase it via SBI Net Banking (under ‘ATM Card Services’) or the YONO app before heading out.
Comparison of Revised Charges (Non-SBI ATMs)
| Transaction Type | Previous Charge | Revised Charge (2026) |
| Cash Withdrawal | ₹21 + GST | ₹23 + GST |
| Non-Financial (Balance Enquiry) | ₹10 + GST | ₹11 + GST |
| Insufficient Balance Decline | ₹20 + GST | ₹20 + GST (Unchanged) |
Tip: Transactions at SBI-branded ATMs remain free for SBI customers within the standard limits. To avoid fees entirely, try using SBI’s Cardless Cash Withdrawal via the YONO app, which currently remains unlimited and free.
